Asian American Chemical Dependency Treatment Services (ACTS) has established its treatment foundation on February 01, 2003 as a non-profit organization in Kent, Washington.  The purpose of the establishment is to educate, prevent, and treat people who have issues and problems in drugs and alcohol abuse and dependency.
Especially, ACTS has initiated its cultural competent counseling program for recent immigrant people with a passion, humiliation, obligation, and even the spirit of brotherhood….

Our treatment agency has been fully approved by Washington State for the Substance Abuse treatment and Domestic Violence Victim’s Safety Program. Currently ten staffs provide treatment programs in chemical dependency counseling with Korean, Samoan, Vietnamese, and English as well.  ACTS serves about 700 to 800 clients per year.
With our ongoing relationship with the community networks, ACTS will continue to provide education and treatment for substance abuse and family issues/problems. In the long-term goal, ACTS will anticipate the following positive consequences:

  • Help to change attitudes & values about substance abuse in different cultures.
  • Increase number of individuals recovering from drug/alcohol addiction.
  • Increase community awareness in cross-cultural difficulties/problems
  • Promote family safety and healthy school environments….

*They also treat Gambling Addiction, and it is what caught my attention! Lets first learn more about Chava, and how she became involved with ACTS*……

My name is Chava Shawn and I am a Human Services Professional (HSP) student at Tacoma Community College, a Chemical Dependency Professional Trainee, and a Gambling Disorders Counseling Intern at Asian-American Chemical Dependency Treatment Services (ACTS).  I came to work at ACTS to fulfill one of the degree requirements for the HSP program which is to choose an agency where I am hired as an intern and receive field training in the human services area that I want to specialize in.

I chose to work with ACTS for a number of reasons. First, we offer gambling disorders treatment which is the field that I intend to work in.  As a recovering gambling addict, I want to give service to the field of gambling addiction treatment because I understand the hard work that it takes to overcome this devastating disease and want to show others that there is life after gambling…

The second reason I chose ACTS is because after sitting down with the founder Tae Son Lee, I knew he was someone I could partner with. He has an immense passion for helping people of all cultures and an endless drive towards improving the Asian-American communities in our area. Which leads me to the third reason I chose to work with ACTS, and that is there are not many agencies that specialize in multicultural service delivery.

As our founder preached his mission to me from day one, and has never once swayed from his message of providing education, prevention, and treatment to people of all cultures  who are experiencing issues with gambling, drugs, and alcohol addictions. What better way to learn about people from all over the globe than to allow them to open up and deeply share their lives in a setting that provides unwavering acceptance no matter who they are.
I feel incredibly lucky to have found such a special organization to associate myself with, to work with, to learn from, and to continually grow with.

Chava Shawn…

Problem gambling is gambling behavior that causes disruptions in any major areas of an individual’s life. The term “Problem Gambling” includes, but is not limited to conditions known as “Pathological,” “Compulsive,” “Addictive” or “Disordered.”
Individuals with gambling problems are characterized by:

  • Increasing preoccupation with gambling
  • A need to bet more money more frequently
  • Restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop
  • Loss of control manifested by a continuation of the gambling behavior in spite of mounting, serious, and negative consequences.

Asian American Chemical Dependency Treatment Services (ACTS) has launched its state certified problem gambling treatment program in 2009. Since then, we have been dedicated to increasing the awareness of problem gambling and providing a culturally oriented education and treatment service for problem gamblers and their families.

According to the Washington State Council on Problem Gambling, more than 100,000 Washingtonians struggle with problem gambling and at least 25% of those people are compulsive or pathological gamblers, the most serious form of the disorder.
Our mission is to increase public awareness of pathological gambling, make availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to work with our community members and networks for prevention and education…..Poker Chips And Cards Stock Photo
